Matthew commented, “It is a common misconception that a Lasting Power of Attorney is for the elderly or those who have lost capacity. However, it can provide peace of mind should you face an unexpected crisis at any age.” One recent tragedy illustrates how important this issue is.

TV Presenter Kate Garraway has shared regular updates with the public about her husband Derek Draper’s journey since he contracted Covid-19 in March 2020. Last month, the documentary ‘Finding Derek’ aired, detailing how the family coped as Kate’s husband recovered from the effects of the virus. In the programme, Kate opened up about the financial impact of Derek’s illness and hospitalisation and the “financial mess” she found herself in. During the first few weeks of the illness, Derek had to be put into a medically induced coma and Kate was surprised to learn that she was unable to access Derek’s bank accounts or raise funds by refinancing their home.

Matthew concluded, "We would urge anyone interested in discussing a Lasting Power of Attorney or Wills & Probate to get in touch with our team here at Gales.  Tel. 01202 512227 e: mail@gales-solicitors.co.uk
